The ancient science of Ayurveda tells you how best to enhance your beauty and nourish not only your body but also your spirit
The fundamental principle of Ayurveda is that everything has to be pure, fresh, natural, organic and seasonal. In ancient Ayurvedic scriptures, beauty formulations, ingredients, food habits and lifestyles were subtly interwoven with the seasons or rutus. Ayurveda lays a lot of emphasis on seasonal harvesting and plucking of herbs, since they are of optimal potency and in their purest form, imparting vital nutrition when used orally or for skincare. From the food we eat to the seasonal changes in our lifestyles, a lot is based on the foundation of this ancient science that works on four levels – body, breath, mind and spirit.
It is only when all four are in perfect harmony that you radiate outer and inner beauty. Inner beauty often manifests as contentment and harmony. You must have noticed how some people carry an aura of happiness around them. It is because of their inner beauty that is radiated in the form of their grace, contentment and vitality. It is the ultimate secret to flawless skin, good health and ageless beauty, and need only be supplemented by pure Ayurvedic formulations that enhance what you already possess.
There is no quick fix formula to eternal youth. Ayurveda emphasises that only those products be used externally to enhance your beauty that are made of ‘living’ substances that are balanced by nature and contain the vibratory energy that constitutes life. All forms of vegetation including trees, flowers, fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices are ‘living’ substances that contain all the purifying, nutritive and balancing properties necessary to nurture skin and slow down the ageing process. They are perfect foods for skin.
Like beauty products, the ingredients used to prepare food should be pure, fresh, natural, organically grown and always in season. The Charaka Samhita advocates eating the right food with the right beverage, in the right amount at the right time, with the right company in the right place and in the right frame of mind. The right food here implies the food best suited to your body type and constitution or dosha, in as natural a state as possible. The place where you eat should be aesthetic, clean and the company should be congenial. This is important because it provides a relaxing environment in which to enjoy food. Peace of mind is essential. Your mental atmosphere overrides all else. If you are joyous when you eat, you are doing the right thing.
Ayurveda says that our mood transforms our food even as we prepare, cook, serve and sit down to eat it. “According to the energy of Ayurvedic principles, a perfectly balanced diet of seasonal foods prepared with care and eaten mindfully in an uplifted mood not only supplies the necessary nutrients to the body but also stimulates the production of ojas, a substance that strengthens immunity and vitality,” affirms Mira Kulkarni, founder and CMD of Forest Essentials India.
